John is right..
The fuel pump is inside the tank and as long as it's primed and running it will suck it dry, but once it has run dry then you're in shit. (not to mention that the pump can be damaged as it's cooled by the fuel)
Volvo is not alone.. My colleague recently accidentally ran his new MB C-class dry and it was an identical story. He needed to fill it with 15 litres (approx 4 gallons) before it would re-start again.
He called the dealer afterwards and they confirmed it as well.
So I guess many of today's cars will actually have this problem if you do run them out of gas.
