Not being on site makes it hard. But can one take a hacksaw blade or an exacto type knife to cut the tab or at least score and weaken it some in an effort to have it break where and you want it to?
Also, I wonder if you benefit on reassembly if you put some glue or epoxy on the case at the lug break to basically glue the lug back on. May be overkill and probably wouldn't have the same strength as original but it might be something. Then again it may be overkill or futile, just a thought.
