Shocks and struts and do not age well

So I replaced the original rear shocks today, along with shock mounts. One mount had been previously replaced.

After 182,000 miles, the shocks didn't work any more. When I pulled them off the car, I compressed them to fit in the garbage can. They have yet to expand!

A lot of the rattles have gone :) The ride feels better. The springs are so strong (still) that pushing the bumper down did not show any weakness in the shocks.

Now, I wonder how bad the front struts are?...
