Dave - You have perfectly described the problem I have had, on & off, for two years. I have the lt pressure turbo 2.4L in my '98 V70 AWD. As much as I love to drive this car, I have to say it has been quite a lemon. The only thing that has kept me hanging on to it, is that the extended warranty has covered most of the $8,000 (US) in repairs. The dealership has been slow, but thorough, in dealing with the various problems and has almost always provided me with a loaner. In an effort to eliminate various noises they have replaced the following: wheel bearing, rear driveshaft, viscous coupling, fuel pump and the air pump. I originally thought the air pump was the reason for this noise, but it was not. Since it was part of emissions it was not covered under the warranty and I had to pay approx. $400 for the part alone. When it comes to repairs on emissions components my recommendation is to try everything else first. Unless you are hell-bent on spewing out (cleaner?) fumes the air pump is the last thing I would do. The three times that I have mentioned this noise to them they were not able to duplicate it. Like yours, it seems to occur only during initial start-up, so I've left it overnight for them to check it first thing in the morning. While it seems to occur mostly in colder temps I have heard it occasionally in temps around 40-50 degrees F. I live in northern Illinois so I have heard it quite a bit over two years but then it can just as mysteriously disappear for a while. If anyone can shed some light on this one it will be greatly appreciated. Good luck Dave and be sure to let us know if you find a cure.
