Have you called a salvage yard? I've found that many Volvo parts are relatively cheap. Interestingly enough, they are cheap because they are so good. Since there is a good supply and a low demand, the prices are reasonable.
I just bought an alternator for a 740 for $30 US, it is guaranteed for 1 year. The local alternator shop wants $80 to do a "dirty" rebuild. (new parts, no deep cleaning)
I priced a starter for a 740, and I can get one for $40 US. A dirty rebuild costs $80, and a new one is $225.
For parts such as these, I'll go used in many cases.
Fortunately I have not needed any 850 parts, so I do not really know how their prices go.
