Check engine light dilemma 850 1997

Is this a common scenario. If the engine is cold and then I start and run the car for 20-30s shutting it off for say overnight the car always runs very rough at startup the next AM for say 1min. (end scenario) This AM my 97-850GLT did this and while it was idling rough the check engine light flickered on and off with it finally coming on bright and staying on. My guess is that the check engine is an artifact of the rough idling which I can only guess is due to fuel flooding condition. I don;t want to take it to the dealer- I do all my own work but of course the 97 has no codes to read so when these situations pop up I am at a loss!!.
FYI I had the front O2 sensor replaced about 40K ago under warranty.

TIA
MAtt
