My story goes on. Since the mechanic could not determine the cause of the check engine light problem (diagnostics not communicating for some reason), I brought the car to the dealer. Probably because they have VADIS, they told me right away it's the faulty Mass Air Flow Meter, that generated the error code 260A (whatever it means), and that it should be replaced - for $380. Now, I've been driving the car without any problems noticed lately. They explained it based on the fact that the meter may occasionally catch a fault of running too lean or too rich and pop up the check engine light. I also read on this Board (and other places) that this is a quite common and well-known problem, and I couldn't get any indication of why this really must be done. Some had a dealer simply reset the CEL - until it would possibly come back on. I don't want to pay for fixing something that seems to be not a serious problem, but a minor annoyance. Finally, I'm curious how the mechanic had missed it.
