If you plan on keeping the car for a while, I'd recomend a set of snow tire for the winter. Do what I and a lot of others on this board do, buy a good set of winter tires mounted on steel rims, and pull a quick switch twice a year. In the long run, it won't cost you any more than the price of a set of steel rims, but the differance in winter traction will be huge.
On another note, when you calculated milage, did you take into account the 5.3% increase in tire circumference with your new tire? The fact that your odometer says you travelled 300 miles since your last fill up, when in fact you've travelled almost 316 may account for the perceived drop in gas mileage.
