Hanging up in Park V70-XC70 1998

My '98 V70 AWD just diagnosed with a bad gearshift solenoid after exhibiting the same behavior. It's a psuedo safety mechanism tied to the brake pedal, just as Masher described. Dealer replacement isn't cheap but it may be preferable to pressing that little override button to get it in gear.
