steering wheel clunk 850 1997

This is a reply to a older post entitled 'popping in steering column' that has had no activity so I thought I would re-post my reply to get a new thread started for info. The symmptom is decribed as a clunk felt in the steering wheel at the initial start of acceleration after decellerating to a complete stop. Through testing over and over while driving, I have found that if I just decelerate to not quite a full stop by lifting off the gas and finally the using the hand brake, nothing is felt upon reaccelerting. Only when accelerating after braking normally using the pedal is it felt narrowing the source to involving the front brakes/steering column. Also, it does not seem to do it when braking from speed using the brake pedal, not coming to a complete stop, and then accelerating (????). It seems the harder I brake the more severe the clunk. It can best be felt when my hand is at 12 o'clock pulling downward on the wheel. None-the-less, it is very annoying. I have checked what I can see on the rack and there are no leaks and nothing appears to be loose at the rack or wheels. I have been putting off having my shop look at it because I assumed it was probably some slop in the steering column/tilt union (but still had suspicion of something deeper). As per the oringial post I replied to, I think this affects more vehicles than just '01 & '02 indicated. I would love to see a pole started on who is experiencing.
