Hi djm,
I'm annoyed with my 850's steering too. While I haven't tested it with braking in mind as you have done, what I find is that some steering at low or zero vehicle speeds (which I presume requires higher effort from the system) involves pops and such felt through the steering wheel. The overall steering sensation isn't as unpleasant as, say, your typical used GM car, but I too find it annoying. My guess -- something in the steering shaft or perhaps the rack and pinion is worn out. I did look at the splined u-joints on the steering shaft, but they *look* just fine. And there's not much to visually inspect on the R&P after looking for leaks.
Surely somebody's worked on this before -- anybody get like-new steering after replacing a rack assembly, or steering shaft components?
TIA,
Steve-o
