I had a similar sympton back in 1997/98. No fault code was stored and no flashing/blinking up-arrow. Car started from limp-home mode for a short period of time and then back to normal. After several tries by the dealer including tranny fluid drain/replace, and tranny replacement. Tranny replacement fixed the problem. It looked like tranny was starting to die.

Have you ever flush your tranny ? I assume that your car's mileage is fairly high. It may not help to do a tranny flush right now. Tranny flush may bring out the problem sooner than running with the old tranny fluid. Since the sympton happened more often lately, you may be able to duplicate the sympton with the dealer or Volvo garage's tech. They should be able to diagnose the problem. If they couldn't duplicate the problem and there was not code stored in DTC. They are not going to do anything!!! This is very frustrated. I had been there too when my tranny started to act like this back in 1997/98. Be prepare to have the whole tranny replaced.
