Well, *is* there excessive wear on the outer edges? Is that what you see as well? And is the rest of the tread in good shape? If so, then it sounds like you've got a toe-in problem, which isn't the tire's fault. Have you had your front end aligned since you've owned the car? If not, you'll see the same problem showing up on your new set.

You're looking for a compromise tire. Long life gives less than ideal traction. Maximum traction gives shorter tread life. Remember -- traction on a dry pavement represents interaction between the polymers and the substrate. Molecular degradation of the polymers is to be expected. The high mileage tires are the absolute worst tire you could have on your car when you need to avoid that once-in-your-life high speed traffic accident unfolding directly in front of you on the interstate.
