Consider having a dealer check it out.
A DEALER??? I suggest that you should cultivate a good rapport with a good dealer, in a pinch they can be invaluable. What happens if your car won't start a few days before your vacation? My dealer would fit me in.
My dealer's service department will put a brick through their certification check for one hour's labor (add an hour for a compression test) and give me a two page report.
Cheap insurance. They can tell you if an ant farted in the cargo compartment.
When I buy a car, I offer to have the car's oil changed, or some other minor improvement to compensate the owner for his trouble. If you buy the car, the gift becomes yours. If the owner does not want that, I give them a good bottle of wine.
