How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

I have a 95 850 turbo...... said I had 10 miles and going up a slight incline, it began to crap out. I sputtered into a gas station at bottom of the incline (lucky it was there - very busy intersection and I would have PISSED off a few motorists). Play it safe and hunt for gas at 20 miles. My 2 cents.
