Also have a '98 T5M. Bought it in 2002 from a salvage yard with a banged up quarter panel and 93K. Besides minor annoyances with rattling interior trim pieces, car has been mechanically sound for 17K miles. Only one trip to a mechanic for leaking o-rings in the oil cooler lines. Fixing minor problems doesn't help resale value so I've learned to just "let go" if they don't affect drivability. Otherwise I try to fix things myself. You'd be surprised what you can fix with a little patience. Brickboard is also a big help.
