Starting Problem, Dead Battery, Alarm

The sound under the battery is probably the air pump. It can run a
few minutes when the car is warm. This site has deatils on the
whole systemthat the air pump is part of:

With strange electircal problems the first thing I would check is
that the battery ground lead is in good shape. They are known to
corrode and have problems in 850s and is something to keep
an eye on.

The battery might also have reached end of life. How old is it?
