I own a 1996 850 Turbo. I've been told that 91 is what I need, and less will wear the oxygen sensors quicker. For the record, every performance site I've ever seen has indicated that high boost and low octane don't mix.
Just to put things in perspective, in Fayetteville Arkansas there's a 10 cent differance between the three grades. That means to fill that 18 gallon tank, I'm spending $3.60 to spring for the good stuff.
I also understand that european cars are designed for european gas... so I import all my... just kidding. The differance is in the sulfer level, which in some mid-90's baby-8 BMWs will cause cylinder liner failure. I've started using Brittish Petrolium (BP/Amaco) fuel lately, and can say I am satisfied with my descision. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
