recommended octane grade?? 850 1995

My manual says the minimum octane requirement is AKI 87 (RON 91). My 95 850 nonturbo has been running on regular (87) gas for a couple of years and it has been great. My car has had no problems with all brands of gas except Shell. I used to get check engine light whenever my car is running Shell (octane rating 91). It happened many times so correlation was very high. Dare not to try it again and I haven't had any check engine light since using other brands of gas. Personally, I like BP the most.
