Cargo Boxes

Does anyone have any experience with roof mounted cargo boxes? I see a lot of Thule boxes and some Volvo ones out there(which I believe are the same). Are they noisy? Worth the price? Easy on and off?

With ski season fast approaching I'd love to keep all the stuff that goes with skiing out of the car.
