Of course you could also point out that all force-fed Volvos have used Mitsubishi turbos since the mid-80's. Poor choice in my opinion. Garrets all the way!
Volvo bought that Dutch factory in the late 70's. They produced high quality, smaller cars for the European market that were not offered over here. The platform for the S40 was developed with Mitsubishi to keep costs down. The Mitsubishi Carisma is a known problem. Not their only one as the head of Mitsubishi Motors was recently arrested in Japan for professional negligence.
My 2002 S40 has had zero problems. I maintain it myself and make sure to keep good synthetic oil in it so the weakest link (Mitsubisi turbo) lasts.
