AC Problems May not be the Evaporator 850

I have a "sniffer" type leak detector that sucks in air and analyzes it for coolant. Works really very well but the engine needs to be off to reduce drafts from the fans. I haven't had too much luck w/ dye but maybe the uv light I have just isn't good enough. The hoses all seem to develope leaks at the crimped connections to the metal tubes.
