thanks for your inputs. not only am i an avid DIY'er, but i also live in germany so to pay the dealer for labor and freon is almost out of the question. an american firm in the area will do an complete evac/recharge for about $100 with about 2 lb freon included. i just need to know how to remove the 2nd fitting i asked about. just found out from a post on volvospeed that a special tool is req'd...there's a spring under the collar that needs to be expanded by the tool.
i will research your concerns about saturating the membrane, thanks!
