It's time to replace the timing belt on my 1996 850 (140,000 miles, no service records to speak of because we got it used). On our older cars (1987 740, couple of different 240s), it was advisable to replace the oil seals (cam- and crankshaft) when replacing the timing belt. The manual for our 850 says there are oil seals on the timing belt end of the crankshaft and then proceeds to describe an insanely complicated sounding protocol for replacing them. The dealership says "there are no seals on the camshafts" and that the only issue is a leak in the oil pump seals, which is both rare and reallly obvious because there'd be oil all over everything including the driveway.
What's the consensus? Are there seals? Should I replace them as a maintenance item or only if they leak?
I think I can do the belt replacement; not sure whether I've got the energy for a seal replacement.
