inside door handle removal 120-130

I was searching previous posts on this topic as I am sure it has been discussed before, but can't find anything.

I need to remove the inside door handles (so I can remove the inside door panel to fix the innards). I cannot remove the clippy thing that holds the handle on to the hub (or I fear I will wreck things in doing so). There must be some very simple magic technique involved which escapes my 7 years of mechanical engineering training.

Thanks all - the forum has helped me alot to bring my volvo back to life.

Get some putty knives and/or bend some med gauge wire into a hook. 120-130

Two things:
Do not apply too much pressure or you will break the black plastic disk. I destroyed two (but had two sapres, so lucky me).

The little wire clip is best attacked from two sides. Pull one side ouot a bit first, then pull the other. Don;t let it get away from you - it's small and will fly a ways if you let it.

When I first did this, I put a small 1/8" spacer between the black disk and the chrome handle to keep it open. I then created a little hooked wire tool that I used to snage the end of the wire clip and yanked it out. It was not a whlol lot of fun, so I looked into other tools.

A MUCH better approach is to pick up a couple of putty knives. The simple narrow 1" inch variety (to pry the disk and handle open) and one of those weird putty knives - has one sharp triangular side that flares out, but has a semi-circular notch cut out of the other side. I foreget the actual name, but you'll know one when you see it. *THAT* is the perfect tool for the task. I got one for $1.00 in the dollar bins at the local ace hardware. The triangular notch is perfect for prying the wire clip out.

I was under the impression that it was similar to GM clips and the readily avaiable GM tool would work... p'haps I've been unobservant?

Thanks for the suggestion - tried a similar route but was not successful.

There is a special generic tool for handles attached to the hubs with clips of this sort (can be purchased at any auto parts store). You push the tool (which is a flat metal piece with a part cut out up the middle of it) into the crank handle at the right angle and the clip pushes out. I'm guessing here, but this tool would likely work on a GM type attachment you refer to.

Unfortunately this tool does not work on the volvo designed handle/hub/clip. The handle crank has a piece of metal (part of the handle crank) that blocks the special tool from pushing out the clips - I know I've tried from every angle.

IPD has a special tool that works pretty well. Not terribly expensive. Here's a link:

IPD tool... 120-130

Not me, the door handle tool.

The IPD #T2297 is a cheap copy of the Volvo #SVO2297 that cost me $35.00 and a month wait back in the early '90's. Lost that one, bought another...lost that one too.

Best,
Shayne.

You can use a regular screw driver to pry the thing open and a middle size
jeweler's screwdriver, sharpened piano wire hook or an IPD special tool to
remove the clip. The harder you pry the thing open the harder it will be
to get the clip out. Careful you don't lose it!! Forget engineering and
revert to animal cunning.
