Best 444 Engine Color - Ford, Chevy or Volvo Red?? 444-544

Hello again folks! I hope the weather is warming up for all you northerners. It's been nice and warm (60's - 90's) down here in VA so far this spring. I can't wait until you guys and gals come out of hibernation so you can sell me some more parts and get back to working on your old bricks. :)

So anyway, I think I'm pretty convinced that POR 15 engine enamel is the way to go. However, I'm not sure if I should get their Ford Red or Chevy red. I'm leaning towards Ford red as it looks like the better match. Has anyone used the POR 15 engine enamel and which color did you choose? Are you happy with it?

I also hear there might be some actual red Volvo engine enamel available from Swedish Treasures? I see they have some, part number 9434521-1, on their site for $16.75 for 1/3 liter. Maybe this is the best bet? Anyone have experience with this paint?

One other thing... Did you guys see the new 444 horn ring on eBay? It's up to over $200 with three days remaining!! The price is way out of my league although it would be nice to have a brand-new horn ring. Check it out here. Think it will get up to $300?!? Sure makes me want to go to more yard sales!!

Best 444 Engine Color - Ford, Chevy or Volvo Red?? 444-544

I've decided to go with the Volvo red, which I'm purchasing from Olof. I'll probably also get some POR15 to be painted on first. Thanks to all who replied and helped me decide.

If you use POR15 for a base, make sure that you rough it up and take the shine off with steel wool. The stuff is so hard when fully cured that the Volvo paint may not want to adhere if you don't. You could try to apply the top coat while the POR15 is still slightly tacky, but if you go that route, test it on a piece of other metal first. BTW, I've gotten the POR15 Ford Red close to the Volvo Red by adding orangy red (tomato red?) gel-coat coloring that they sell in tubes in marine supply stores.

Updated Pictures - Bodywork Day 444-544 1958

Tony,

I used the Volvo paint from VPAutoparts. Brushed on over self-etching primer. It must have a lot of pigment because coverage was really good.

Best 444 Engine Color - Ford, Chevy or Volvo Red?? 444-544

Tony,
I have used the POR-15 Ford Red, and although the quality of the paint is great, nice and glossy and hard, the color is wrong - much too pink and not enough pigment in it to do a good job of covering, even after three coats. So, I went back to Plasti-Kote Universal Red #209. They also have a Ford Red (I forgot the number, but it's the same color as far as I can tell.) The color is as close to the original Volvo engine red as you can get, if not identical. Remember, the color on a 40+ year engine is no longer like it was when it was sprayed on. The Plasti-Kote stuff has everything going for it: the right color, cheap, comes in rattle cans, and it is readily available, so that, if you run out before the job is completed, you can run out and get another can before you lose the wet edge.

Best 444 Engine Color - Ford, Chevy or Volvo Red?? 444-544

Hi Tony,

I used the POR-15 on my B16 and B20 about 5 and 10 years ago. I know it was a Ford red, they may have even called it T-Bird Ford red or something like that.
The color is pretty close to the original but not exact. The biggest difference that I found was the texture of the finished product. It is very smooth and glossy which makes it easy to clean but does not match the factory paint which had more of a rough finish.
The POR is a five step process; clean, prep with some type of phosphate spray, prime with the actual POR-15, and then two coats of top color. The brush drags quite a bit but it does level out well. There were a few spots where I could see the top coat did not cover well for some reason. As with all paints, cleanliness is the biggest factor.

My overall opinion is that I like it on the daily drivers because it is so easy to clean. It has held up good through year round driving and ambient temps between 0 and 100F.

However, for authenticity, it would not be my first choice due to the texture.

The horn ring price seems high to me. Saw a used B18 factory oil cooler go for around $180 the other day. Not really sure what makes it worth that much. Great for the seller. I don't buy on ebay much anymore after being burned a few times.

Best 444 Engine Color - Ford, Chevy or Volvo Red?? 444-544

Hi Tony:

Actually it was +24C yesterday up here in the far north; just a nice temperature for cruising around. That NOS 444 horn ring was a lucky find for someone, at a yard sale!

I used POR-15 engine paint on my B4B. It's a 2-stage process, but you must follow their instructions explicitly. The base coat is POR-15. The top coat is the actual color and it does brush on nicely. Unfortunately, their Buick Green was not close enough to the B4B green, even though their color chart seemed to indicate it was. I ended up buying the authentic Swedish engine paint from Swedish Treasures and a second tin when I visited Olof last year. This is a great product and has lasted well, even on my license plate!

My advice is to use a commercial degreaser, buy a small tin of grey POR-15, then go with the Swedish authentic engine paint.

A similar product to POR15 is RUST BULLET. It brushes on, or thinned down, can be sprayed on. Other than a clean surface, no other prep is neccessary.

This product is running $50 a quart, but that is enough to do a LOT of painting!

Like POR15, the finish is smooth and very hard and slick. I've had no problems spraying engine enamel right onto the virgin surface of the Rust Bullet, although it might turn out that the finish coat would stay longer if you rough up the base coat.

I use FORD RED engine enamel. It holds up well under hard conditions (like heat) and I can get a fresh rattle can any time.

The top half of my engine looks great. I'll be working on the bottom of the car when I finally (at long last) get space in the garage where I can put the car up on jack stands.

I recall the Volvo Red engine paint, but unless you put a sample mext to the Ford paint I don't think you can tell the difference. I use the stuff that they sell as matching body paint, etc. I can't recall the name of the company at the moment, but you'll find a rack of the stuff in any auto parts store.

Steve
