Tail light question 200

On the 1989 240 dl can the lense be seperated from the rest of the tail light ass'y? The reason I am asking this is, whe your looking at the driverside tail light ass'y, the White socket some how shorted out and fused to the rest of the circute board. Also if the lense can be seperated please tell me how. I looked at it and I am compleetly puzeled. Thanks for any help.

    Tail light question 200

Yes it can. I am assuming sedan right? The tar or whatever the heck that it is glued with is extremley sticky! Find someting with a wide tip on it and a lot of leverage. Pull SLOWLY!! I almost shattered a lense because I started rushing it. When you are prying away it the lense you need to cut the sticky tar stuf as you go. a pocket knife works quite well for this. Make sure you clean up the edges when you put it back on for a clean fit. Find a good glue that can fill any gaps really well, this will avoid any issues with the lense leaking! I ended up using glue for tennis shoes, supposed to adhere the rubber back to the the bottom of the shoe...it worked wonderfully!!!! Good luck! I hope this helped and happy bricking!

    Tail light question 200

Referencing the Bentley manual, the rear exterior lenses and interior bulb holders appear to be one piece. I find that hard to believe, but it's cold enough here that I won't run out and check it just now.

If that's the case, though, you'll need to go to the boneyard and find a new one, or get one off the 'net.

Note the Volvo lights links on the Brickboard. Might as well support those who support us.

    Best,

    Tail light question 200

For some unknown reason the only lens that can be intentionally separated from the housing is the reverse light lens, the clear one.

Getting the reverse lens out has not been a problem for me, they seem to come out by themselves!

On my 1986 and 1988 244s the only white bulb holder (socket?) is in the passenger side lower outer location. It holds a 2-filament bulb, the 5W 4 Candle Power light being the marker lamp, the other being the 21Watt 32CP brake light. All the other bulb holders are black.

If your car has a white bulb holder on the left, that is an error. The 21 watt brake light makes enough heat to cause damage to the housing if it is lighted as a marker light.

If your repair is to the bulb holder(s) or the printed circuit board, there should be no need to separate the lenses from the housing.

Check with the BB advertisers for an after-market circuit board. For a new housing, I always go to eBay. Caveats there are that a tail light from a 1985 or older won't work without modifications, and non-Volvo lights have a history of early failure (according to brickboarders).

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Tail light question 200

Thank you. It is a sedan. I think both sides in mine have white sockets. They are used with the 2 filiment bulb for the break/tail light. I wonder what the best route for repair is because it got so hot it fused to the circut board. The tail light comes one but not the break light. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

        Tail light question 200

At the very least you will need to get a black bulb holder for the driver's (left) side tail light. Like the white one on the right side, it is an unusual item. Black and with three contact pieces.

Junk yard item, and get more than one.

Overheating can make the plastic where the bulb holder "clamps" on get wavy and brittle. Your may or may not be that way, easy to see.

Your circuit board may be toast. Years ago I bought one on eBay, but I have not seen one recently. Look in the junk yard (or on eBay) for a DS tail light of a 240 1986 or newer year. Use a mirror to check the condition of the circuit board where the harness connector hooks on. Get one that isn't too burned, they all get some problems after all those years.

Thinking out loud - if you find a good one at the J-Yard, swap in into the car. Just be sure that the circuit board part number begine with a "6".

Clean up the contact spots before installation, also clean and slightly tighten the pincers inside the connector. The connector back side opens, look for the hinge.

        Good Luck,

        Bob
