17 foot wheels won't fit an 1800ES anyhow, I think...

Not much room to spare, but they fit. Tires are 235-45.

Looks really nice, but noisy ride.

How is the steering effort with these?
They may have all mighty high grip potential and cornering load ability, but don't you lose the nimbleness and quick steering response?
also Doesn't the car get all darty when you hit road irregularities and uneven surfaces?

When I bought the 1800ES, it had the 17-inchers on it. So I have nothing to compare it to, really. But it doesn't seem to dart around at all, follow pavement grooves, etc. Just a bit too noisy for me, and the extra grip is not something I really need driving down the interstate...

Wow...those are huge tires! Stock rolling diameter would be 215/45/17, which is what I'm running on my 122.

Fitting 17" wheels isn't a problem. Fitting 235/45 rubber on 17" wheels creates a little more of a challenge.

Dale,
Not to split hairs, but in the interest of accuracy,
Stock diameter is 185-70-15 or 25.19"
And the chassis is originally designed around
165-15 or 25.4"
I am getting 24.61" for your 215-45-17's

185/70-15 were the stock tires on the ES.
That is what I have on my 1970 1800E with stock ES wheels. 185/70-15 are hard to find and very expensive. I'll go with cheaper and readly avaliable 195/65-15 when necessary to buy new ones.
In my experience; you loose wet traction with wide tires, all else being equal of course. I live in SE Texas, wet traction is more important than looking cool.

I live in the pacific north west, I'm pretty sure wet weather performance is pretty important here... That being said, the only way wider tires can possibly hurt wet performance is in hydroplaning resistance. If you have good tires with tread on them, you will have better performance with wider tires, hands down. You're not supposed to go 70+mph through puddles anyway.

I guess I would say that wider is better too; if I was trying to sell bigger wider tires to everyone.
"If more is better, then too much must be just right". Just don't miss an insurance premium, incase, god forbid, one of your customers with "too wide" tires loses control and dies.

Well...I went on stock diameter of 185/70/14 or 195/60/15 which is pretty much what all the Volvos I've owned have had. 215/45/17 is very close to those tires. The 165/ (80)/ 15 is somewhat taller and a 235/45/17 would be much closer to the rolling diameter but...holy cow! That's a wide tire! Almost 3" wider than stock...

I agree completely,the 165-15 is the born on a dirt road/
bred on an old school european rally.
Triumphs,VW everybody used them in the day.
Pizza cutters I call them, cause they cut the 'cake',
and will operate in 4-5" of mud.
Also I can hit 2" of standing water at 60 mph and not
hydroplane in my cars.
However it is wise to take a smidgen off the diameter
when fitting a larger/heavier wheel & tire combo
to maintain performance.
195-65-15 is good all around &
205-60-15 is good for street.

Don't have anything to really compare it to, but it feels likes it's a roller skate with that much contact.

Shocks are Bilstiens. Everything else stock. No IPD swaybars or anything.

I'm trying to switch them out for a set of 16" Superlites with slightly narrower and quieter rubber.

These are for the performance types.

If possible could you post photos or e-mail me mario-at-adastrawoodworks.com when to you go with the 16" wheels.

That is the size I'm thinking of and would like to see an application and hear how it drives with your combination.

Its on an Amazon in my case but I think I can benefit from your feedback.

The tire/wheel package is one of the spendiest upgrades if appearance is part of the equation so I'm trying to research as much as possible.

Thanks,

Mario E.

Swaybars are an essential link in the... 1800

Cornering performance package,all
my cars have them, and they even make
the 165-15's do a surprisingly good job.
Do reinforce the A arm sway mounts, however.
