Thanks for the reply and the warning. The main reason I asked this question is that the local Indy shop claims that a "spreader tool" is needed to stretch the housing in order to get the ring gear assembly out.
I appreciate your concern about knowing "exactly" what one is doing... this is a delicate job at best. I have rebuilt one Dana 40 and re-geared two Ford 9 inch rear ends, so I can understand your concern about shimming the ring gear, getting the torque right on the pinion bolt, and finally checking the gear tooth pattern.
I'm just hoping that I don't have to swap out the gears... they get a bit pricey!
