Anyone found a good center console style cup-holder for a 240DL? The pickin's are slim. Don't fancy the stick on or vent mount types. Too wimpy.

Last year I got the same kind as Ken C. Then I got the cloth/vinyl cover from the 240 armrest that does not have the drink holders, and customized it to fit over the Ken C type, to make it cushier. The fabric (blue Trico Plush), matches my door liner fabric. IMHO it was a good upgrade.
The one thing I didn't like about the drink holder assembly was that it wouldn't stay shut. So I fastened a slim strip of steel to the top inner bracket, and electric taped a slim magnet to the front "door". Now it's got just the right amount of magnetic pull to stay closed, but still easy to open.
It's the little things that make a difference, ya know?

Is this what you're looking for?

I got this on eBay -- it also provides two holders for the rear passengers as well. But realize that it's not as good as you might think -- the holders aren't very deep, so if the cup is tall, it may not be very stable.
But if you want one, just do a search, and save it -- one will show up eventually for which eBay will automatically notify you, and you can bid on it (that's what I did).
Good luck.

try the center armrest ones. they're OEM. rare, but the work well for the non-supersized drinks.

This one's my favorite, and I had planned to have the boyfriend weld me one, but I realized I'm short and drive with the seat pretty far forward, so I don't think there's enough space. Not sure what I'll try instead.

I like that one too but realized I'm a giant and often lean my leg right where the cup would be.

The cup holder sits lower than you would think...I'm 6'1" and 240lbs and it's never been in my way. Short people have driven my car as well with no complaints...Rob

Haha. So I guess this is only a cup holder for medium sized people.

I have found that the biggest problem with installing DIN cup holders in our cars is clearing the center stake to allow for cup larger than a 12oz can, while at the same time, not interfering with the shifter, especially in automatics.
There have been successful installations by some people on BB (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1278577/220/240/260/280/possibility_cup_holders.html) but you will see how close they come to the shifter.
I have been rolling around the idea of the little flip-open cup holders that I see on eBay. They can be mounted with screws, and they are about the size of the small 4-inch speakers upfront. The door panel might have to be reinforced, and this will only work if you have installed additional speakers down low in the door (unless you don't mind not having music, which in Tampa traffic, is the only way I don't lose my mind). There is definitely enough room for cans and bottles, and larger drive-thru cups might fit as well. Only other catch would be that they would block the vents.
Anther option I have found as far as DIN cup holders go are a style from a 00 - 01 VW Passat.
They look a little shoddy, and would require some fabrication for the install, but mounted low like they are in the picture, heavier beverages might be supported by the transmission tunnel, and they would clear the shifter as well. They are little pricey though, and the budget doesn't allow for such research nowadays.

I installed those in mine some time back, and they screw through the sheet metal of the door. I mounted mine just above the speakers in the front doors, and they work great. The price was good as well (somewhere around 15 bucks for the pair). They expand to hold anything that you would wish to drink, and fold up out of the way when not in use. I can reccomend them. The tan color is not a dead match, but could be fixed with some dye of the correct shade.

Thats the way I'm going to go eventually, but that dash cubby has so many possibilities that it pulls you away from "Keep It Simple Stupid."

Okay, I guess the picture didn't go. We can try this:

Real men hold hot coffee in paper cups between their legs with no wimpy cup holders!
However, our '93 has the 2 cup slide out forward thing on the padded armrest which attaches in same way as standard armrests, and it's very stable. Our '92 has the slide out 2 front/2 rear referenced below, and the overall armrest hinges from the center console and is not so stable (it's out of the car at the moment for epoxy fix where screws attach). OEM Volvo accessory, and not a great design. I would try to find the more solid 2 cup holder. Also, while I've never taken one apart, might be able to find a beat standard padded armrest and cut out holes for 2 cups. Could even have plugs for holes when not in use if wanted to. Along the same lines, though less destructive, buy some minicell foam (google it) and shape a block with cup holes to fit toward rear of handbrake. Spray with "Tooldip" to stabilize.

After posting asking about the same thing, found one good solution. At the local Krogers I found a thermal cup made by Thermo King, it was recommended by a BB post. It sits inbetween the seats just right on the emergency brake and it is wide enough not to slip or slide around. I have a console replacement without heat seater switches. In a place with a record low temp of 18 F seat heaters are not a big deal. The AC is, but not so much on the heat part.
Have been using one for at least three years now, no spills ever. And since I have a 32 mile across Houston every AM drive, need to cup of coffee to get the motor running on the way to work.
There is that hard to find armrest with the four cup holders in it. If you can find one.
Regards,
Paul

I've been doing the same thing!
Works perfect, costs nothing (except for the cup!), and best of all: No destructive screwing things into the dash!

The one hooked on the glove box door does a better job holding a heavy drink.
But the latch has to be in good shape.
For this other one - - -
Paint the wood block black.
It has a deep notch cut to accommodate the coin tray edge.
Contact cement holds it in place.
