The problem lies in the formulation of paint from the 50's through the 80's. Silver paint had very little if any binders in the formula. It is pretty much just clear with poly added. That is why so many of the cars and light trucks from that era had the peeling paint problems. White was also a problem with General Motors. A lot of owners had their cars repainted in a light gray color. Modern base coat/clear coat finishes will not have that problem. You are in for a repaint, so do it right if the old car is worth it. Thankfully, my 245 is white, and Volvo did not have any issues with their white paint.
