The mystery wire is the Service Socket for cranking the starter motor. If you have a Bentley, it is item number 113 for '91 models, page 390-55. The service socket allows you to bypass the ignition switch for cranking the engine. I've made up a wire that plugs into this female receptacle and stretches to the battery (+) just for this purpose. I keep it in the glove compartment. It's also useful between the starter's thin wire and the battery (+). I put an alligator clip pigtail on the jumper wire for this.
