This needs to be emphasized:

"It sounds to me like it might be a problem where the clutch cable anchors to the firewall"

Have an assistant operate the clutch pedal while you look, or you operate the pedal and have someone else look. If the firewall plate flexes, it is likely cracked, and will cause your symptoms.

I don't know about later cars, but it's pretty common in my experience with cars of mid-80s vintage.
