The ECU may also be part of that. It may get a bit upset when fuel trim is out of whack trying to avoid the hesitation (and possibly knocking) during acceleration and suddenly decide to back off to Plan B. If it gets severely out of trim there would be a DTC set. As I recall, not all trim codes result in the Check Engine indicator being lit. In any case, he admitted to doing an OBD reset without checking for codes plus a max of three codes can be stored.
