SU HS6 carburetors 444-544

previous post duplicates my state of mind--total blank.
I'll try again.
I have a beautiful pair of SU's that were rebuilt by Barongray a couple of years ago, and decided to install them on the 544 I've been working on for 6 years. I had a 2bbl Weber on it for the past year and it has run fine-even to St Louis and back. I removed the Weber, installed the SU's and cannot get it to idle at all. It starts and runs great-- at about 1800 to 2000 rpm. I have downloaded, read, and practically memorized over 20 pages of tune up procedures and nothing works. I have took them apart and back together at least 5 times, and still cannot find the problem.
I realize anyone that might help would have a LOT of 'did you do this, or check something else' type questions which I would be happy to answer--but probably not feasible here. My phone # is 918-786-4321 if anyone would be interested in giving me a call,or would call anyone interesed in my problem. Any response will be appreciated. I am in NE Oklahoma. JIM

for sure something has been over looked
SU's are very simple seems like a vacuum leak like a gasket leak manifold leak or somewhere you are getting too much air
take a break and look everything over

I've had success finding vacuum leaks by making the engine run at the lowest speed it will idle (use the idle screws if you must) and spraying starter fluid on and around the manifold area behind the carbs. You don't need to be overly generous, just enough to cause the idle to rise suddenly. Vacuum lines too. Idle rises, there's the leak.
Have you eyeballed the jet height to about 1/16th down just to start?

Today I corrected the 'slightly' open front carb throttle plate, double checked ALL the recommended setings, re-installled the carbs, plugged the connection for the PCV, and started the engine. Adjusting the mixture had almost no effect on engine rpm,and I used water (recommended by a Volvo owner) and sprayed EVERTHING and nothing changed. 'Idle' speed is 1700 rpm. ???????????
I expect about a dozen Volvo owners at my shop on Saturday--trying to set up a VOCA CHAPTER in this area, and perhaps one of them can see what I'm missing. JIM

Lord willing I'll see you Saturday but meanwhile make sure your throttle butterflies close all the way, that you don't have spring-loaded overrun valves in the throttle plates, and that your PCV is all hooked up right. Sounds like a big vacuum leak, about the size of the PCV circuit to me.
Check those things and other possible vacuum leaks and post back!
