AW70 to M47 swap hit a snag... AT crank bushing frozen. 200

Just happened to do another one of these. Making a note for the record.

The AT pilot bushing was rusted in place. I soaked it overnight w/ penetrating oil; heated with a propane torch; clamped the bushing with a vice grips and turned until I pulled it out.

Clamping it with the vice-grip jaws straight on and wiggling did not work.

The jaws of the vice grips gouged the bushing. The gouges are outside the precision fit area of the crank. I took them out with emory cloth by hand.

I will try Lucid's hydraulic trick next time.

AW70 to M47 swap hit a snag... Help!! 200

Ok, I hit the button too soon.

Here's the snag.

I've gotten the old AW70 out and the pressure plate off and was ready to put flywheel, pilot bearing and clutch when I noticed that that is already some sort of pilot bearing in there already. This bearing is twice as deep as the pilot bearing for the manual one.

So my question is... How do I get this old deeper pilot bearing out?

Need to get this out to move forward so I need responses ASAP!!

Thanks,

Matt

I am a bit confused as to what you are doing but you need a different flywheel for an automatic vs manual.

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a small (wire) snap ring on the outer edge of the pilot bearing that you must remove before pulling the bearing out.
It should slide out after this ring is removed.

That's from my memory because it's been a long, long time since I've removed or replaced a pilot bearing on a Red Block....I hope it's close to right.

hope this helps

Your response is correct if you are doing a clutch on a manual transmission.

I'm replacing an automatic with a manual and the pilot bearing that is currently in is twice as deep as what will replace it.

Once I get this thing out I'll replace it with the new one and use the clip to hold it in place.

How did you remove a normal pilot bearing? Maybe it will work the same way.

Thanks,

Matt

Are you saying that your pilot bearing doesn't have a snap ring (wire circlip)?

I don't see what difference it makes how deep the existing bearing is .

The pilot bearings are not pressed in....it is simply a close sliding fit.
You should be able to pull it out with your fingers after removing the ring unless it has some corrosion holding it.

You may have to use some penetrating oil and a srew driver to help it come out.

hope this helps

Alright, I've been doing a little research on this and this is what I've determined.

The automatic transmission doesn't use a "pilot bearing" in the crankshaft.....it used a solid "pilot bushing", this bushing is held in the crankshaft by the flexplate.

To convert to a standard transmission (M46?) you need to remove this solid bushing and relace it with a "pilot bearing".
You will have to find (purchase?) a snapring (wire circlip) to hold this "pilot bearing in place, since the auto transmission didn't use one.

That's what I found....I hope that it's correct.

Steve,

Yes! That is exactly what I needed to know. So what you are saying is that I should be able to pull that solid bearing out and then slam my pilot bearing in its place.

This is awesome! Thank you so much.

Matt

AW70 to M47 swap hit a snag... Try this hydraulic trick... 200

If for some reason you can't "pull" the AT pilot bearing (bushing?), you might get it out with hydraulic pressure.

1) Find or make a rod (wood dowel will work) that is 5" or 6" long and a loose fit inside the pilot whatever.

2) Fill the pilot cavity with grease.

3) Fit the dowel to the greased-filled pilot, wrap a rag around the grease area, and smack the end of the dowel with a BF hammer. Watch out for flying grease and repeat as necessary.

This worked for me years ago on an MG-TC pilot bushing.

I gotta write that down. I never had to use this but I got a few years under the hood yet.

My guess is this trick was learned in an old Ford garage This is the standard method of pulling bushings off "truck" motors in ford garages (amongst others).

I’ve done the swap, remove the bushing and install the bearing. You can order the clip from Volvo or use a junkyard one. Whichever is easier.
