I liked my 84 240 the most of all we've had, but that's probably because I got into pretty much every corner of it before picking it clean and sending the carcass to be crushed at 375K. Rust. Definitely "pre-galvanized". Paid $380 for it in 2000 and got 10 good years out of it.
MIL bought a 940, which I took care of for her short-term ownership, and I did enjoy working on it, but not so much driving it. You are so right about the foam bits from the vents and the one she had seemed to be even worse than a 240 in interior plastic. And I so don't want headliner in my hair. Yeah, I've got hair. A friend pointed out how the 940 resembles a Buick, and since then I can pick out a Century when I see one.
I'd probably "step up" to a 940 if I had to, but the documentation of the 7/9 series is hard to come by, save the compendium Steve has gleaned from posts on this board. I like having a fairly complete set of green books on 240.

I used to be indecisive. Now, I'm not so sure...
