Hi again,
I have been reading over two posts that are active with similar issues and it's getting sort of hard keeping the symptoms apart.
On the other post I tried to get some description going but the person has little time to get into "bed" with his car and get to know it more consistently.
At least you are in the bedroom having pillow fights! (:-)
The part about it slowing down, shuddering and rocking, I presume, with it some clacking and the surge makes me think bad AMM hose. A big air leak, something?
You turn it off, it doesn't keep cranking or anything is a bit confusing, but is expected, it's the part that it shuts down hard makes me think it fired out of time with the Pistons.
What you are describing, to me, as I'm the only "wacko" on here who jumps into weird thoughts, is a delayed effect of the ECU shutting down and the ICU's last gasps!
Did we ever define what ECU number and its color that is in this car?
I keep thinking there might be a connection between the CPS and the ECU not working correctly.
Maybe the timing is jumping around along with programmed adjustments in conflict trying to keep the engine running.
For a bit, which was some time back,I was thinking a fuel pump issue or powering it. Now, with this scenario, its getting too crazy even for a wacko like me!
Maybe the information should be put in the works since it is a 1989 LH 2.4.
I believe it was their first year.
Can you look and see about the ECU labeling from the right side kick panel.
All you have to do is pull up the door threshold plastic strip, loosen the door molding going up and the right kick panel will be loose.
It might shift the thoughts of the others here, that worked on one car recently, that had these similar issues and it was a Hybrid circuit in the ECU.
These could die slow and manifest, as they die, in different ways.
