I second this. Buy A Multimeter

The New Tool I had to purchase when I bought my 87 was a Digital Multi Meter.

Don't get the cheapest spend a few bucks, you can damage the ECU when/if you get into that depth of testing with elCheapos

Before, with a 75 and and 80 all I needed was a home-made test light.

and if you don't like to read there are tons of YouTubes that show how to use them
