Why don't you just replace the head gasket.
I'm mean that's what you really want to do, right.
You just need a few here to confirm that is could be the problem.

in my 87 wagon sometimes I see "white smoke", sometimes it curls up so I can see it in the hatch window when I'm stopped at a light.

The one variable for me is the condition of the atmosphere(ambient-temp/dew point).

You are already planning on replacing the rear main seal. Why don't you just pull the engine and do a complete rebuild. You'll have fun. More fun than obsessing about each individual possible problem.

You'll end up with a great car that should be good for at least 10 or more years.
