Hi Phil,
No slip rings to wear, no brushes, no moving electrical contacts period. Your memories must be from the 3-terminal units used with K-jet, LH2.0, and LH2.2.
Also, full 12V to the unit won't damage it. If you exercise it, say to help wash the sludge out of it, a 9V transistor radio battery will not last terribly long.
Using the OBD mode 3 (excessively) to cycle it could flood your cylinders with fuel, as it runs through all the outputs, not just the IAC.
