Hoping to use a 240 alternator on 7/9 series cars

I have a nearly new alternator from a later 240. I only have 7/940 cars at this point.

When I compare the two alternators the mounting points on the cases are the same. However the width of one of the brackets on the 240 alternator is wider than the one on the 940 alternator (shown in image). That would result in the tensioning device on the 940 alternator being back about a half inch when it is transferred to the 240 alternator, but I think I can fabricate a spacer and just use a longer bolt at the base of the tensioner.

The pulley on the 240 alternator is made for a belt that is a bit narrower than what is used on the 940. That would result in the belt riding a little high in the pulley (about 1/16”)

There isn’t a label of any type on the 240 alternator.

The questions are:

Have any of you ever done a swap like this?

What is your best guess on the output of that 240 alternator?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this proposed hack,

Randy

Hoping to use a 240 alternator on 7/9 series cars

Several years ago I replaced two alternators - The one in our '90 744TI siezed and the one in our '88 745 GLE had gone south in Michigan (a good story, I'll tell it at the end of this post)

Both alternators failed at almost exactly 215K miles.

I got a 100 amp unit at a Volvo specialist junkyard for $30 - It was guaranteed for 1 year - It was still performing well at 275K miles. It had 110K miles on it when I got it - the junk yard guy told me he had 15 of them and they usually lasted to 200K.

I suggest a junk yard 100 amp alternator.

Now a nice story - My daughter was traveling from Massachusetts to Edmonton Alberta to work for Ducks Unlimited as a wildlife biologist. Her lights dimmed on a Saturday night in Michigan - she pulled into a rest area and the car stalled.

Her phone was dead as it had been plugged in to charge. A couple a the rest area let her use their phone to call AAA

The operator of the tow took her car to his garage and let her call us on his phone, then he took her to a motel.

Sunday morning he had his friend open his auto electric shop and the alternator got new brushes - he did not have Volvo brushes, so he cut down some larger ones.

She was on the road again by noon!

The 7/940 cars have more electrical accessories fitted as standard equipments. These are electric radiator fan, bigger blower motor, heated seats and side mirrors, ABS and front foglights. The 2 speed radiator fan could use up to 50A of power. You'd need typical alternator power of 80 to 100A. Some cars even has 120A installed (ok maybe thats for 960). If your 7/940 still uses mechanical fan, heater only no AC, no heated seats then maybe you could get away using 240 alternator. The 240 alternator in the photo looks like Bosch K1 series with external fan. Having max typical output of 55 to 65A.

Another mechanical aspect to consider is the front-back length of alternator, see if it hits the AC pipes above the compressor when installed (if car has AC).

    Hope these helps,
    Amarin

Thank you Amarin. I didn't realize the output on the 240 alternator was only 55 anps. I also hadn't thought through all the additional power demands on the 7/9 series cars.

I appreciate you taking the time to point that out to me.

According to green book New Car Features for 1982, the switch from 55A alts to 70A with internal regulator was complete for all models except the carbureted B21s and B21F-Turbo and Diesel. Then the NCF manual for '91 says 80A for cars with AC and 65A for those without. All of mine now have 80A alts even the 79, but that one in your picture does look like the 55A unit I replaced. If you have an electric radiator fan, a strong alternator is a must, otherwise the worst single load in the car is the heater blower.

          Thanks Art,

both of my turbo 940's originally had 100amp alternators. The P&P replacement on my car is an 80amp and I certainly have not noticed any difference.

I called my local auto electric store this morning and they were unable to supply an original Denso but had a rebuilt Bosch available for $300.

I have a 100amp Denso with a bad diode. They would look into rebuilding it for me for $85/hour plus parts. The $22 tear down fee would be credited to that if they rebuilt it.

I currently don't need one but I would like to have a plan in place if it should be needed. There is a certain comfort in knowing the fix is on my shelf or close by.

my RPR Catalogue lists 2 for the 240
            80AMP Bosch-AL157X
            70AMP B-AL57X

RPR also lists the AL157X 80amp for the 940.
            The 940 Turbo AL155X 100amp

I got a remanufactured one (Beck Arnley)from a local autoparts store (this was a few years ago)

When I called looking for one for a Volvo 240 -- they said don't have one---
Then I said how about a Bosch AL57X, he looked again and had one on the shelf.

It was designated for a BMW, but it was the same --- the only difference was the Positive post, which had plastic collar around it ---I guess for the BMW connector. I had to change the connector end on the Positive cable to fit.

So try asking for the Bosch part ---- AL157X for the 80Amp or AL155X for the 100amp --- and don't mention Volvo.
