1992 245 fuel supply problem. Great car! 200 1992

1992 245 wagon AT. Fuel gauge has never worked. Last Sunday at the Beacon Sloop Club Corn Festival car wouldn't start. It started every time for 4 years. Pretty sure it ran out of gas. I put in 3 gallons, still would not start after numerous attempts. Had to get flatbeded home (38 miles). On the way home stopped at local Shell station and put in 6 more gallons.
Got home offloaded at 12:30 AM I went to bed. Try to start the next day - no go.
Open the access cover to check the in-tank pump (picture #1). No wires are connected through the top where the pipes go down into the gas tank (picture #2). The wiring that is going through passes over the top of the gas tank to a 1.5 inch diameter junction (picture #3). Not sure what is connected to it. I've never seen this set up on my previous 4 Volvo 245s.
Is there an in-tank pump? How does electricity get to it?
I'm working out of my Bentley manual, just getting ready to jump the fuel relay to test the pumps. I will open the black plastic rectangle junction box in picture #1. It has 2 wires in and 2 wires out. (Picture #1) maybe there is a fuse inside it.
Picture #4 is looking forward at the main fuel pump and fuel filter.
I wanted to get this up on the RWD forum so others could look in giving some ideas, and things to check. Going back out to set up the fuel pump relay jumper test, then try it. I will get back on the computer with update.
I've got pictures ready to post but I can't figure out how to download them to here.

Sorry, I hear the photo hosting part of this board is not working of late. I'd love to see your pics. If you can host them on a free image hosting site you can just include the links in a post.

The 1992 definitely came with an in-tank pre-pump. The only other wiring in that vicinity is for the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on the differential housing. I see you describing that rectangular junction box -- that's for the speedometer/ABS.

I discovered no wires to my wagon's fuel tank once on return from a vacation. The rodents got to them. But you say you're fuel level indicator has never worked? Don't you suspect you bought the car from someone who modified it? What was the explanation for no fuel gauge?

Really does smell like there's no wiring to the tank fuel pickup assembly for either the fuel sender and as well the pre-pump. It may well have been that way for some time with the main pump able to handle the load, especially if the tank was normally kept reasonably full. The tank now having run dry, the fuel line to the main pump is now dry and as well the main pump. Having now added gas to load the in-tank side of the fuel line a bit, the line up and out of the tank and down to the main pump is still dry. Without the pre-pump being present and able to push some fuel up to the pump, there isn't any fuel to prime the main pump and it may not have enough suction to pull fuel up and out of the tank.

I don't know, Art. It worked for me just now.

Odd, though, the top image was pasted in the body of the post.

The bottom image was inserted using the Brickboard method and it's below my sig.

      ?????

Or did you mean the gallery is not accepting new images?

        Hi Don,

When I said "I hear" it seems I was passing a bum rumor, definitely not a conclusion I came to myself. Seems I read complaints of this nature often, but whether or not the gallery or upload functions or not doesn't stop me from including images remotely hosted. Could be it is just tricky for those used to drag and drop image posting on other forums.

        Is that like "re-tweeting" disinformation?

OP -- I included my write-up on the in-tank pump because it starts off by asserting "everyone" is aware a good main pump can suck from the tank with no operating tank pump. I suppose I took that for granted.

          Sorry, Art.

When I read your remark I just assumed it must be the case because the Brickboard seems to be slowly decaying, not that I'm complaining, mind you. It still works well enough to fulfill it's primary purpose.

Two ways to post pix. Well, one really. Just two ways to get there.

    Go here:

    https://www.brickboard.com/GALLERY/

Click on Add a New Exhibit. From there it should be self explanatory. Then when you want to include a pic in a post (not to be confused with a pig in a poke) look to the bottom of the page for IMAGE URL and click on [IMAGE LIBRARY (UPLOAD/SELECT)]

That works for a single pic from the BB Gallery. For multiple pics in the same post use just copy the HTML code beside your BB Gallery pic and paste it into your post.

    The other method:
