experience with "k" cam 200 1984

Ok I have a chance to buy an K cam for my normally aspirated b21a, has

anyone used this in my simular situation? I know these should be advanced 5-6 degrees to have any low end power which is what i'm looking for or

would i be better off with a vx or the a cam i already have? also is there

a way to take a stock cam gear and have it machined to be 5 or 6 degrees

advanced without having to buy the ipd, mvp gear? the ipd cam/gear package

sells for $350 and i'm looking to get as much hpower on a budget, I got the

money but to cheap to part with it.

any ideas or personal experience would be a great help,

thanks in advance, mark.

Re: experience with "k" cam 200 1984

Mark,

I installed a K cam in my B21 engined ProRally car. The engine uses a pair of Weber DCOE45 carbs, headers and the CR is raised to 10.5:1.

The engine produces great performance up to the 7,000 readline. Performance below 3,000 rpm is poor but not just due to the cam.

I use the ipd cam gear at 4 degree advanced. This is primarily to compensate for the milled head. Shaving the head changes the timing belt geometry and tends to retart the cam.

I used an ipd Vx cam in a milder engine and liked the performance but a variable cam gear was not needed.

A more radical cam could produce more power but would affect streetability.

How much is the K cam that you're considering? I may be interested if you decide not to buy it. The K cam is a high rpm cam good for top end power, and probably isn't a good choice for low end torque. See these sites for some more info on cams:

Re: experience with "k" cam 200 1984

If you're looking for torque, the K cam is not for you. A B23E produces its peak torque at 4500 rpm and only produces 2-3 more ft.lbs over the automatic 1984 spec B23F with the M cam... Not really worth it, if you're looking for low end power, but it does pull strongly from 2500 rpm on up to the redline. The A cam is a good compromise between power and low end grunt. If you want more juice, I'd look into converting the car to K-Jet, and then using a VX cam. It won't provide low end power, but will make the car into a screamer...
