ring gear 200 1982

I found a 1982 244 turbo for $700cdn (could probably get it for 500) but it needs a ring gear. I am not much of a mechanic (lots of vw bug experience but that hardly counts) how much work is involved in replacing a ring gear? Can some hack (me) do it in his drive way?

Thanks

Steve

Diff or flywheel? I'm confused. Duh!

Re: ring gear 200 1982

I ASSUME they mean ring gear in the REAR END/Differential???

Why the heck replace the ring gear? Replacing the whole rear end is very doable on the 240 in your driveway. Heavy but simple.

The typical failure is the pinion bearing(s). But as a whole, unless run dry or some fool messes with pinion preset they will last a long time. And you wouldn't just toss in a ring gear after one "failed"....

A 240 turbo is a sad thing to waste if that's the only problem. $500CDN is like .26$US (just kidding)- but that is cheap and maybe with a few bucks you'd have a GREAT car.

Re: ring gear 200 1982

Good subject,

You might be able but you need special tools just to work on the rear.

The diff cant' be removed without spreading the casing apart slightly.

Setting the depth of the ring and pinion is a trial and error procedure

until its set correct. I used a pro to install my torque sensing diff

and the labor was $460US. Usually its only about $300 but my car needed

a some extra work. That is just the labor. You probably need to buy a

new ring and pinion which means new bearings, shims, and while you are in

there you might want to do the rear bearings if the car has a lot of

miles.

The cheapest route is probably to install a good complete rear axle from the salvage yard if you want to do the repair yourself. Try to get an axle from a turbo they are the heavy duty 1031 model. Although I'm sure a regular model would probably be fine for a stock turbo.

Re: ring gear 200 1982

Hmm, sounds like more than I want to put into this car. Maybe I'll just buy it, take the wheels and tach for my wagon and sell the rest to the local salvage yard.

Thanks for the info

Re: ring gear 200 1982

If the car is nice it is very straight forward to install a complete

rear axle assembly. E-brake, hydraulic brake lines and bolts are all that

hold it in the car. Happy rolling.

Yes...and look for a limited slip used axle too 200 1982

but recognize everyone wants one. Best bet might to check Internet and find a supplier willing to sell you used limited slip one.
