940's gas mileage against a Wrangler's 900 1995

Even though a 1995 940 sedan weighs close to a '95 Jeep Wrangler, with almost the same 4-cylinder displacement, will the 940 still get better gas mileage than the 4wd Jeep? I have been told that even the heaviest 940 model will get better fuel economy than the lightest Wrangler. And I have heard both engines at idle; the Volvo B230F 2.3 four is quieter than the Jeep four or straight-six, wouldn't you agree?

Re: 940's gas mileage against a Wrangler's 900 1995

Chris' points are spot-on. My wife's 940 gets an average of 25-26MPG. It's a fairly hefty car for just a NA 4-cyl (3400lbs), but it makes the most of it.

The Wrangler's 4WD indeed sucks gas even when not engaged - there are still parts reciprocating (hence extra rotational mass), as well as simply more parts (extra shafts and differential(s).)

Aerodynamics? Well, the 940 has a Cd of about .36, still good even by today's standards. I don't have a number for the Wrangler, but I guesstimate about .5? Over 35MPH, you'll be burning a lot more gas to plow the Jeep through the wind.

Tires - the Jeep likely has tall, wide tires. Tall is good for efficient gearing (assuming the final drive isn't really short), but it's also bad in that the sidewalls flex a lot (energy lost as heat), and wider tires have more rolling resistance. The 940 has 185/65-15's, pretty skinny.

Noise - well, the 940 is a luxury car. It has a lot of sound dampening inside, as well as an underhood mat to keep the mechanicals quiet. The Jeep is a utilitarian vehicle that was never meant to cosset its occupants.

Re: 940's gas mileage against a Wrangler's 900 1995

Well, figure that the Wrangler also probably has 4WD, which sucks gas just to turn the parts when it isn't engaged. Plus if it has 4WD it's probably--but not definitely--riding on tires that have more resistance (fatter).

Also a Wrangler has crappy aerodynamics. So, even if the 940 takes more gas to GET to speed, the Wrangler probably takes more just to keep it AT speed.

I think the 940 is quieter than a 4cyl Wrangler for certain. The Jeep four cylinders make a real racket. Half of it is because they are usually not insulated very well.
