back seat width 700

Can Anyone tell me the width of the back seat in a 700 series wagon or if anyone has had sucess in putting 3 kid car seats side by side. I know I can't get them in my 200 series wagon.

Re: back seat width 200 1989

I'm kind of there myself with the three kids in seats. I've got the three in the back of my 240 wagon but it's awfully snug back there. I've tried a 700 and yes there is definitely more room for the three seats.

I've yet to do a roadtrip with this configuration, but I do have the luxury of the third seat to resort to, which in turn would mean a Thule for the top for luggage. I was thinking 700 or 900 series too but could save quite a few bucks by sticking to my 240 with a $500 Thule versus the upgrade to

700-900 series. (at least a few thousand)

You can put a box directly on the roof, skipping the cost and height increase of the Thule. This works OK if you don't put anything heavy up there. With the rain gutters of the 240 and 740, there are much less expensive roof rack choices if you prefer the box to be on a rack for more load capacity.

In my experience, though, the novelty of the third seat wears off quickly, especially for younger kids on a road trip. I would be inclined to keep then all in the middle, unless you have a problem with fighting in such close quarters (having kids that squabble in the car on long road trips does not make you bad parents). Things will get better as you can retire the various types of child seat.

    Re: back seat width 700

It is wider. We had a Fisher-Price toddler seat and an infant seat in the sides and a cheapy small "booster" in the middle for a while, but it was a tight squeeze and required that the seats (and kids) be installed in a certain order. I should have taken a picture!

Unless you have twins or triplets, you do get through that stage quickly.

If you can afford it, consider a used 940 wagon, which has a built-in booster and shoulder belt in the middle. You might even find a 940 wagon rear seat (to put in a 740) in the boneyard - who cares about colour, it's going to be hidden with baby seats and the back seat will get trashed by the kids anyway.

We have had the third seat in our 740 and now 940 and find it very handy.

I've seen 740 wagons with the third seat fitted and a pair of toddler seats in that seat. I never did that, but do believe that it is safer than the deepest back of a minivan. I don't know what the designers of the third seat would think, though.

I have 740 and can use 3 car seats. There are as many anchors; 2 sides one on the back of the seat and center one is located in the floor of the trunk directly behind center seat.

    Re: back seat width 700

    Ron,

I have a 1989 740 wagon and the limitations of 3 car seats in the car, is that there are only 2 anchor points. This would limit the safe installation of 3 car seats as you were questioning, if however you had 2 car seats (one each on the outside of the back seat) and then used the center lap belt for a booster seat.

This would be the only SAFE way to get 3 kids into the back seat, other wise you might look into getting the 3rd back seat for the wagon that fits in the very back of the car.

    Good luck.
