Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

I have a 1979 245. When I bought it I was told the cold start injector needs work, possibly just a cleaning. Now that I'm around to it, I can't find it represented in my crappy Haynes book. Where exactly is this located and will a good cleaning clear up it's malfunction? for now, I simply have to feather the gas for a little while until it idles on it's own but I'm sure it's affecting more than that.

Thanks

Richard

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Richard, A typical cold start injector problem I had on several CIS systems I looked at is malfuction due to the connector on the temp sensor breaking to bits. On CIS the cold start injector has its own circuit that basically consists of power taken of the startermotor solenoid going through a temp sensor screwed in the back end of the engine (near the interioud heater conection) going to the cold start injector.

The idea is that, only if you crank the engine and with a cold engine, the cold start injector is operated. In addition the temp sensor has a heating coil in it that heats it up slowly causing it to cut out after a while preventing the engine from flooding.

Typically the connector to the temp switch breaks to bits preventing power from going to the injector at all. Test is very simple by connecting a lightbulb to the connector that goes to the cold start injector. When you start, the light should go on, if you keep on starting (disconnect ignition) the light should go out after a while. When the engine is warmed up the light should not go on at all when starting.

The injector itself is normally not the problem, they are robust and only used for a few second a day. They could leak, but that gives different results.

Connector is hard to reach btw. My current car is Jetronic LH 3.1 which does not have a cold start valve. I don't know if your car has the cold start valve integrated in the Engine Management System (LH 2.4??) in which case you can still do the test light check, but the fault would not be so obvious to spot and fix.

Reg,

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

The cold start injector (CSI) is located at the top center of the intake manifold. It has a fuel line to it and a two wire connector.

If it is simply not operating, the car will be very hard to start. To test you can pull it out by the two allen bolts and then try and start the car. Alternatively, you can just apply 12volts to it instead of starting the car (this will test only the spray, not the operation of course) Be careful not to spray gas all over the place. The spray should be strong and should *I think* spray for 20 seconds after starting.

Good Luck,

Will R.

Thanks Will

I'll play with the one in the parts car and test out the one on my driver.

Thanks again

Richard

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Hi Richard,

Does the car start good, but just...how should I say, just puka-puka-*plunk* if you don't touch the gas? If so, I have the same problem with my 240ti. But I can actually get mine to back fire if I hold the gas down a lot and after about 20-30 seconds goes away.

I've kinda ruled out the cold start injector as it "starts" good, just needs alittle helping hand with the cold idling.

Maybe the this is one for the Great Volvo Master Don??

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Hi Alan

Yeah, I guess you could say it's a puks-puka-*plunk* (Excelent description by the way). I'm still having ignition trouble so I can't do a lot with it right now. (I'd be quite happy to hear the puka-puka-*plunk* right now) The previous owner told me a Volvo specialist said it was the cold start injector but then again, the guy was selling a car. If you get yours fixed first, please let me know what it was. If I can get away without messing with the injection system I'd much rather go that rout. My Volvos have never had injection troubles in the past. I had an Audi years ago that was nothing but injection trouble which is why I'm nervous, sort of Audi flashbacks I guess.

Thanks

Richard

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Hi Richard,

I don't exactly know what kind of ignition trouble you are having, but I

may have a suggestion. If you have an extra coil, preferably one you know works :o).......try starting the car with that. For some reason, some Bosch

coils have a tendency to go bad after sitting a long time without use, or going a long time without use, and then thrown back into use. In which case, it will *suddenly* refuse to start after using it about 2 weeks. I had this problem on 2 volvos so far and thats enough to convince me to carry a spare around in my toolbox.

Might help, might not, but hey....its a thought!

Hope you get her going again!!!

Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Hi Alan

Thanks, Luckily I do have a good deal of spares from Volvos gone by. (I'm a die hard pack rat)

The ignition trouble al began with my adding an instrument cluster with a tach because my overdrive wasn't working. I had a short and I'm assuming it jumped time. Once she's running again I'm leaving well enough alone for a while! Well. I'll try to anyway.

Thanks

Richard
