heater fan 140-160 '73

Is it really as impossible as they say to replace the heater fan in a '73-140 car? Tips or suggestions. Also any tips or suggestions about replacing the rear suspension bushings on the same car?

It's not that difficult, just time consuming. And there's a million and one clips and screws to lose or confuse. Having now ripped the dash out twice - once for the wiper linkage, once for the heater fan, I've got the job down to a few hours. 4 hours tops. Get yourself a box of BAND-AIDS, you'll need them.

Assuming you are in the US, you have the same heater unit as the 240 cars.

Impossible? Hardly. Just take the whole dash out. I did this Saturday to replace the wioper linkage on my '73 142. About a jillion phillips head screws (get a #3 driver). Remove the center console face, and then remove EVERY #3 phillips screw you see.

Pull off the covers off all the round vents. Remove the gauge cluster.

Get the manual. Difficult? No. Time consuming? Sure is. In fact, I contemplated changing the blower motor just because I was in there.

I'd say about 4 hours for the job. That's what it took me to R&R the wiper linkage.

Alternatively, if you don't mind a bit of discomfort it is very well possible to do this job with the dash in place. Remove the glove compartment, under dash panels, center console side panels and then start digging your way in. With a bit of work and care you can eventually undo the clips that hold the side covers in place, and remove the motor. Be aware that to be able to use modern (fully enclosed) motors in place of the old open cage motor a bit of work with a dremel tool will be required.

I did this twice on a '74 164E (first motor broke after 7 months).

The reason I asked is because I just got the green service manual and it didn't look as bad as it has sounded, but I wanted to hear any tips anyway. Plus if you do not have a green service manual..... get one!
