Hard shift 700 90

I just got my 740 ('90) back from the shop, and while there, I got a pretty thorough tune-up. When I got it back they were bragging about how I was going to love how much more power they gave me. Well, I didn't notice that night because I live right near the shop, but when I drove to work the next morning I was shocked that the shifting was so screwed up. It races before shifting into second and then needs to reach 4000 rpm before slamming into the next gear. I called the mechanic and he told me that the computer has to relearn something and that it will clear up. Does this guy know what he's talking about?

Re: Hard shift 700 90

Success! Success! You guys are the Best!

The adjustment was easy because the business end of the cable is so accessible. Took two tries and I'm back in business. Thanks.

Re: Hard shift 700 90

hey dan

when i got my 1988 765ti from my brother it had just had tranny service from a local dealer and shifted 1-2 at 3500 under LIGHT throttle.

i readjusted the kick down cable as per the book, problem was,... the small lead stopper (like split ball fishing weight) had moved on the cable, if i recall i slid the stopper towards the cable spool, then GENTLY pulled on the cable till i felt a definate LITE reistance, I then slid the stopper untill it was about 1/8" from the adjustor and crimped it. The book says that with gas to the floor the stopper should be about 2" from adjustor. I still wanted lower shift points, 5500 rpm at full throttle (stock w/265K) so i slackened cable some more. The haynes book describes this adjustment fairly well but if the stopper is in the wrong place then it just doesnt work. best of luck

Re: Hard shift 700 90

Maybe they're on the level usually, but it sounds like they meant to say:

"You're not gonna BELIEVE how we f-ed up your car and are trying to make you THINK we did it on purpose!"

The 'puter has nothing to do with the shift points. Not a thing.

The shift control cable does. Either they adjusted it (why?) or screwed it up somehow. Often the sheath around the cable is rotten. Check it out... the thing that goes from the little throttle wheel back and down towards the transmission.

Re: Hard shift 700 90

I don't think the computer has anything to do with shift points. I would suspect they screwed up the downshift cable. Easy to adjust if you know what your doing. Is it a Volvo shop or just "a shop".

Re: Hard shift 700 90

Also David,

Just to be sure: Is the downshift cable the same thing as the Kickdown Cable I keep seeing mentioned over and over again on Bricks?

thx Dan

Re: Hard shift 700 90

Thanks David.

They did a good job convincing me that they were an all around top drawer shop with experience with Volvos, but I suspect that they got in a little over their heads on this one. I was going to take it back there but I think I'll take it to a known, albeit far away, Volvo shop. Thanks for the advice.
